Design inspiration
Olivia's starting point for the design was the beautiful soft pink metallic sheen of Laminex Matte Rose Gold. It wraps around the top edge of the island bench in a thick strip, and is also applied to the kicker, which is recessed to bring a sense of structure and lightness to the bench. The benchtop and vertical faces are clad in Laminex Raw Birchply, which replicates the incredibly popular natural tone and texture of plywood, but with the durability of premium laminate. While real plywood can warp or split with exposure to water, and tends to "yellow off" with age, these surfaces will stay looking pristine in even the most demanding kitchen.
Between the metallic edging and the woodgrain, a fine shadowline in rich grey-blue Laminex Winter Sky makes the Matte Rose Gold "pop" just that little bit more, while also drawing out the darker woodgrain patterning in the Raw Birchply. With this shadowline detail, the recessed kicker and the wonderful combination of colours, the island bench feels more like a piece of bespoke furniture than a solid block of cabinetry.
The core palette
The connections to the landscape - the muted organic green of Laminex Seed, the woodgrain patterns of Raw Birchply, the dawn blush of Matte Rose Gold rising over the midnight blue of Winter Sky – make the kitchen feel relaxed, natural and authentic.
Creating harmony with organic colour palettes
The rosey glow of Matte Rose Gold is picked up on the rear wall by a splashback of dappled pink marble tiles laid in a retro geometrical pattern. Above this, white wall panelling in a simple lining board profile lightens the space and provides a clean background for displaying decorative objects. White was also chosen for the oven, stovetop, sink and tapware, giving them an understated presence and leaving the focus on the surface colours and textures. And all of this is framed by overhead, underbench and tall cabinetry in Laminex Seed. Muted greens have emerged as a popular alternative to standard neutrals, and the beautiful yellow-green tone of Seed immediately brings to mind the eucalypts and native grasses of the Australian bush.
These connections to the landscape – the muted organic green of Laminex Seed, the woodgrain patterns of Raw Birchply and marble patterns of the tiles, the dawn blush of Matte Rose Gold rising over the midnight blue of Winter Sky – make the kitchen feel relaxed, natural and authentic. Add some bright green indoor plants and plenty of natural light, and this is the perfect stage for modern Australian daily life.
