State of Kin collaborated with Laminex and explored the possibilities of Next Generation Woodgrains to design and build a meeting room for modern needs and desires. Laminex Tasmanian Oak TrueScale™ AbsoluteGrain® and Laminex Spotted Gum TrueScale™ AbsoluteGrain® were used alongside each other to create a warm, welcoming space that could play host to board meetings as much as an escape or breakout room for staff requiring privacy to create and ponder.

State of Kin worked closely with Evolve Interiors to see their ideas come to life, from the large custom table in Laminex Spotted Gum TrueScale™ AbsoluteGrain®, to realising the inlay detail of the sliding doors, to the curves of the joinery, Andy Joachim, Joinery Director at Evolve Interiors had the answers.

Creating the Custom Table

Crafting State of Kin’s impressive boardroom table allowed for a full expression of TrueScale®’s no repeat finish.  With a large part of the design and its impact revolving around the matching leg and cutout, Evolve Interiors worked some clever joinery and techniques into its production to achieve its seamless appearance.

“We used the CNC machine to create the form of the leg,” explains Joachim, “mitring the square ends where possible [for the cleanest edges.]”

Using matching HPL laminate, Evolve cold-pressed the curves of the design, but to achieve the distinctive look of the woodgrain leg and it’s abutting design, the top and the leg had to be made together to hide all the fixings.

“As the material is only 18mm thick, the top and the legs are layered and built up to achieve the extra weight and thickness required of the design.”

Fabricating the Sliding Doors

Fabricating the sliding doors and their characteristic stripes begins by taking 18mm boards of factory prepped HPL Laminex Tasmanian Oak TrueScale™ AbsoluteGrain® and running them through the CNC machine to “rout 9mm pockets for the inlays,” explains Joachim. “The inlay material [Laminex Spotted Gum TrueScale™ AbsoluteGrain®] is milled down to 9mm thick so we can maintain the overall 18mm thickness.”

Joachim takes a very sharp chisel to square out the pockets ensuring a precise fit and seamless integration. To complete the doors, the individual Laminex Spotted Gum TrueScale™ AbsoluteGrain®  panels are glued, set into the inlay and allowed to dry.

Creating the Curved Joinery

State of Kin’s subtle flair is applied to the curved front drawers, bullnose shelves and concave recesses of the meeting room’s cabinetry. An element the studio has returned to several times throughout the project, its success due to the consistency and repeat nature of the detail.

“We needed to create some joins in the curved joinery as the laminate wasn’t wide enough to span the full perimeter. We were able to create some MDF formwork that we lined in 8mm bendy ply and then used Laminex Terril to complete,” remembers Joachim.

“The drawer units are actually square – not curved – so we made small, curved ends that seamlessly joined with the shape of the main joinery.”

The shelves were then templated to match the exact curve of the laminated unit which were provided directly from Laminex with the bullnose complete, “just like a benchtop”, says Joachim, “and the under-panels were made by us in Laminex Brushed Stainless Steel, which was adhered to the base of the shelves which came unfinished.”

Ultimately, working with Laminex Next Generation Woodgrains allows you to push what has been traditionally possible with laminate. The realistic no repeat finishes of TrueScale® and AbsoluteGrain’s® lifelike feel and touch means the warmth and tactility of woodgrains is possible, while providing all the benefits and durability of Laminex.
