Design industry leader and longtime friend of Laminex, The Design Files, recently renovated their Collingwood HQ kitchen into a haven of curves, warmth and cosy tones.

With the announcement that Surround by Laminex can now be used on curved surfaces, bends and on ceilings, the possibilities of what you can do with our product have expanded exponentially. The Design Files took full advantage of those possibilities, rejuvenating their office kitchen by creating a curved culinary hub, that is functional, aesthetic and welcoming.

A LESSON IN EXPRESSION.

The Design Files founder Lucy Feagins wanted a fresh update to the small office kitchen and one that matched the style and sensibility of the website’s industry-leading reputation. The small space, only 2m x 3m, existed as most office kitchen’s do; a utilitarian, serviceable site to warm lunch and make tea and coffee. Working with her cabinet maker husband, the two of them designed and planned the renovation.

“The fun thing about doing a renovation in your workplace (rather than at home) is you can be a bit braver and more carefree about it,” says Feagins.

The palette of pink and terracotta was inspired by a painting by Lucy Roleff – now hanging in the kitchen – and the warm tones were teamed with American oak veneer with contrasting timber handles by Linear Standard. Despite the choice to enclose the space slightly, the kitchen is still filled with light, thanks to a skylight style opening in the centre of the roof, as well as a Ceto handblown glass wall light tucked away in a storage nook. The lighting reflects off the warm tones of the space, creating a cosy, communal feel for The Design Files team.

Alongside the considered and delightful atmosphere inside the kitchen, perhaps the most striking element of the build is the box that encases the space. Clad in Surround by Laminex Batten 25 and painted in Dulux Clay Court, the new kitchen is bold, and in the context of the office has a stage-like, theatrical presence.

Curving the exterior walls to enable smooth transition and easy paths through the office, Batten 25 is the tightest repeat of the straight-edged grooved range and a wonderful textural addition to the Moroccan Pink Zellige tiles and Rojo Alicante marble benchtops. With all services and appliances concealed and built in, The Design Files has built a kitchen that lives up to their love of beautiful, workable spaces and lives well lived.
